What is a Medicare Blue PPO?
Blue Cross/Blue Shield offers a variety of plans to suit nearly anyone’s budget. A preferred provider organization, or PPO, is an affordable way to access the best health care in your area. A PPO is a form of managed care plan. This means that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois has contracted with a network of the finest health care providers, clinics and hospitals in your area. Our excellent network agrees to provide discounted pricing for our members, which helps keep premiums affordable. In return, these providers enjoy a steady stream of referrals from Illinois Medicare Blue PPO members.
Unlike HMOs, PPOs do not require you to get a referral from a primary care physician prior to seeing a specialist. PPOs give you more flexibility than HMOs, then, to manage your own care within the plan network. If you go out of network, you may have to pay a higher co-pay or deductible. In some cases, you may not receive coverage at all out of network.
