Medigap Plans
The purpose of a Medigap plan is to help pay some of the costs the original Medicare coverage doesn’t cover. Private insurance companies currently sell 11 standardized Medigap plans (Plan A, B, C, D, F, F+, G, K, L, M, N) that Medicare eligible participants can choose from that offer basic as well as detailed additional benefits per plan. Cost will vary with each Medigap plan because the more benefits in the plan, the higher the cost.
Medicare doesn’t cover many of the costs that may emerge such as: check ups, diagnostic testing, and more. Different Medigap plans can take over what original Medicare had left off, by lowering these out-of-pocket healthcare costs. To be eligible for benefits of a Medigap supplemental insurance plan, you must also be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to get a Medicare Supplement. The best time to purchase a Medigap plan is during your open enrollment, which begins 6 months before the first day of the month you are age 65 or begin Medicare Part B and last for 6 months after. The Medigap Plan would begin when your Medicare Part A & B starts. Also, if you need Medigap insurance for you and your spouse, you must purchase each Medigap plan separately.
