CIGNA

CIGNA began as two separate companies, the Insurance Company of North America or INA and the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company or CG. INA was founded in 1792. It was the first marine insurance company in the United States, and today it remains the country’s oldest stockholder-owned insurer. Connecticut General was founded in 1865 when the Governor of Connecticut signed a special act of the General Assembly incorporating the company. In the early 1980’s the two companies chose to combine and their initials made the new company’s name, CIGNA. Philadelphia was selected as its headquarters.
Today CIGNA has established a reputation as one of the top health, accident, and life insurers in the country. They now insure more than 10 million people in the United States. CIGNA offers many different types of plans to better benefit their customers. The company offers a PPO plan, HMO plan, POS plan, a variety of supplements, and HSAs.
