American Community

American Community began in 1938 as the Michigan Hospital Benefit Association. The company was a pioneer in the health insurance industry, and it was the first company in Michigan to market individual and group hospital-surgical insurance plans. In 1964 the company merged with Community Life Insurance Company and became American Community Mutual Insurance Company. Today American Community is one of the best health insurers in the market, and insures those in Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

American Community’s goal is to provide quality, affordable health coverage to families, individuals, and small or large groups through an employer. The company offers many different types of coverage. On the individual side the company offers health, vision, dental, and maternity options. Its preferred provider organization, or PPO, plans come with a broad network of coverage. The company has a short term plan that is ideal for students, those in between jobs, or those that are self-employed. American Community provides group options for health, life, dental, and vision. The company also has accidental death and dismemberment coverage.

Recently American Community has been looking for ways to improve the customer service side of their company. Many new programs have been implemented to better benefit the consumer. The company now offers a 24 hour Nurseline which members may call at any time and get medical advice on a personalized basis. TelaDoc is another new program where members can call a phone number and at the other end they will reach a network of licensed primary care physicians available to diagnose medical problems, recommend treatment, and prescribe medication when appropriate over the phone. World Doc, a similar program, makes medical assistance available on the web. The RXaminer provides useful information on prescription and over-the-counter drugs from their costs to their uses.
