Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina
Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina (BCBSSC) was originally started by a priest named George Lewis Smith, a businessman named Roger Huntington, and a journalist named George Buchanan. Each of these men shared the same vision of creating a non-profit prepaid hospital plan for the Palmetto State. The community strongly supported them. After lobbying the General Assembly for legislation to begin the company, their hopes became a reality in 1946. This agency was originally called the South Carolina Hospital Service Plan (SCHSP). In the spring of 1947, SCHSP merged with the Hospital Benefit Association of Greenville. By the end of the year, almost 30,000 South Carolina residents were members of this prepaid healthcare plan. By 1948, the company that would soon be Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina had a net income of $27,000. Blue Shield was established in 1949 as a non-profit group that covered physician’s services. Blue Shield hired Blue Cross to administer and promote contracts in 1950. Even after many years of excellent service, BCBSSC is still dedicated to providing outstanding healthcare coverage for the members of its community.
