Hospital Service Corporation of Rhode Island was created in September of 1939. Ten years later, Rhode Island Medical Society Physicians Service was established. The two companies joined together in 1962 to provide coverage for office visits and prescription drugs. Hospital Service Corporation of Rhode Island changed its name to Blue Cross of Rhode Island in 1973. The next year, Rhode Island Medical Society Physicians Service changed its name to Blue Shield of Rhode Island. In 1982, the two companies merged to form Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI).
