Capital Blue Cross (CBC) was originally known as the Capital Hospital Service. It was established in 1938 by representatives of the Carlisle, Harrisburg, and Polyclinic Hospitals and the Dauphin County Medical Society. The name was changed to Capital Blue Cross in 1965. By 1996, CBC served more than 1.4 million members who received more than $1 billion in healthcare benefits. Today, Capital Blue Cross serves 21 counties in Pennsylvania.

More than 8,200 professional providers are available to deliver care to Capital Blue Cross members. CBC takes great pride in the fact that they work with each of the 37 hospitals in their service area to give their members the choice of which hospital to use. CBC headquarters, in Harrisburg, is one of the largest employers in the area, with more than 2,000 employees.
