 In 1938, a group hospitalization plan, known as Group Hospital Services, was established in Kansas City. Later, the name of this organization was changed to Blue Cross of Kansas City. Kansas City Blue Shield was formed in 1943 to provide a prepayment plan for physician services. In its first year Kansas City Blue Shield served more than 14,000 clients. These two companies merged, in 1982, to create what is now known as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City (BCBSKC). Through the years, BCBSKC has grown to great heights, serving more than 880,000 members in 30 northwestern Missouri counties and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.
