In 1937, a group of 15 hospitals agreed to participate in the Associated Hospital Service of Baltimore. This group began using the Blue Cross service mark that same year. Maryland Hospital Service became the new name of the Associated Hospital Service of Baltimore in 1947. The Maryland Medical Service Inc. was establish in 1950 and was licensed to use the Blue Shield name. The Maryland Hospital Service and the Maryland Medical Service merged in 1969 to form the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maryland (BCBSMD). Later, BCBSMD made the decision to become a CareFirst company. Today, the company is known as Maryland’s CareFirst Inc. The CareFirst company serves more than 3.3 million members, making it the largest health insurer in the Mid-Atlantic region.
