Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana (BCBSLA) was formed when six area hospitals came together to create the Hospital Service Association of New Orleans in 1934. In 1958, the Hospital Service Association of New Orleans changed its name to Blue Cross of Greater New Orleans. This company merged with Blue Cross of Baton Rouge in 1975 to form Blue Cross of Louisiana. The name Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana didn’t come about until 1985.
BCBSLA is headquartered in Baton Rouge, with other offices in Alexandria, Houma, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Monroe, New Orleans, and Shreveport. 1,400 Louisiana residents are employed by BCBSLA. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana serves 858,000 individuals, making it the largest health insurer in the state.
