Iowa Wellmark BlueCross BlueShield
In 1939, the Hospital Service Incorporated of Iowa was established, and later named the Blue Cross of Iowa. In that same year, another health insurance agency was created. This company was called the Associated Hospital Services Incorporated and was later renamed Blue Cross of Western Iowa and South Dakota. In 1945, the Iowa Medical Service changed its name to Blue Shield of Iowa. By the 1960’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa became the leading health insurance providers in the state. These companies merged in 1989 to form the IASD Health Services Corporation. The Wellmark brand was adopted by the agency in 1997, creating the Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa (Wellmark BCBSIA). Today, Wellmark BCBSIA serves a total of 1,658,124 customers, including 153,734 individuals under the age of 65.
