In 1948, a group of physicians founded the Medical Service of the District of Columbia. Three years later, this group was authorized to use the Blue Shield name. The Medical Service of District of Columbia and Group Hospitalization Inc. merged to form the Group Hospitalization and Medical Services Inc. The name was later changed to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of the National Capital Area (BCBSNCA). In 1997, The District of Columbia announced its attempts to combine operations under the CareFirst name.
