Blue Shield of California

Blue Shield of California (BSCA) began in 1938, on December 18 by the California Medical Association House of Delegates. Back then, BSCA was called the California Physicians’ Service. In its first year of operation, Blue Shield of California had 20,000 California citizens subscribe for healthcare and 5,000 physicians join the prepaid healthcare service plan. In 1984, BSCA offered the first healthcare plan to cover a heart transplant in the nation. Today, the annual revenue for Blue Shield of California is $7.5 billion.

Blue Shield of California offers many programs, including: the healthcare and coverage program, the health and technology program, and the domestic violence prevention program. HMO and PPO plans are provided for health and dental care. BSCA presents its clients with two options for short-term health plans.

If you enroll in a Blue Shield of California healthcare plan today, you will receive a large choice of preferred physicians and hospitals from one of the largest PPO networks in California, protection against major healthcare expenses, optional HMO or PPO dental coverage, and preventative healthcare benefits to help you and your family live a long and health life.

Blue Shield of California is a not-for-profit health insurance agency that is guided by strong values which encourage innovation in technology and other fields. BSCA places its customers at the center of everything it does to promote understanding about its plans and programs.
