Alaska - Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield

Premera Insurance Company is taking a leadership role in reinventing how the insurance industry provides health coverage. They have been providing quality insurance in Alaska since 1947 and since 1933 in Washington. They provide coverage to more than 1.4 million customers in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Arizona.

Premera offers many different options for health care coverage. Those plans include the PPO (Preferred Provider Organization), EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization), traditional indemnity coverage, dental, and long-term care. They have come up with a new approach as well, letting the customer pick features for their health care plans that suit them and their family’s needs best.

They have a network of 35,000 health care providers and 193 hospitals that participate. In 2004 they paid over $10,000 in claims and over $10,000 in premiums. In 1998 Blue Cross of Washington and Alaska merged with Medical Service Corporation to become the present company Premera Blue Cross.
